Godly Success

“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” Joshua 1:8 NLT

What makes you successful? Maybe you’re thinking of hard work or dedication. Being smart or good with words? Knowing the right kinds of people or having good connections? Making lots of money.? But the passage above says we are only successful if we study the book of instruction and obey everything it says.

The best kind of success.

“Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.” Psalm 1:1-3

I so often find myself trying to figure out things on my own. Trying to come up with a plan or path that will lead me to success. And more often than not when I try to come up with things all on my own, I do not achieve success. God’s plan is so much better, and he can give us success that we can’t achieve on our own. The world’s view of success is so fragile. If your definition of success is to have lots of money, that can easily be taken away from you. If you think being successful is having a good job or multiple degrees, once again all of those things are fleeting. But the psalmist tells us that those who delight in the Lord prosper in all that they do. With God it’s not just some passing pleasure but instead a success that we can live in constantly.

The key to success.

“Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go.” 1 Kings 2:3

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

The key to experiencing the best kind of success is really simple, read the Bible more. For us to know what is right we need to spend time in God’s word. We need to be studying and obeying everything that we can find in Scripture. The Bible is not some overbearing rule book but instead a perfect map of how to live the most successful life. If we obey God’s law not only will we find success in our earthly life, but ultimately we will make it to a heavenly life and that is the most successful that anyone can be.

Godly success.

Let’s all work a little harder to not get caught up in the world’s version of success but instead strive for Godly success. Because his way is better. And his success is more awesome than anything we can come up with on our own.
